One of the most common causes of missed work in the US is lower back pain.
The causes can be specific (i.e. identified) or non-specific (i.e. the cause is unknown). Yoga has been shown (through numerous studies, including one by NIH in 2005) to be an extremely effective treatment for many with lower back pain.
Robin will lead a 4-class series based on a program sponsored by Aetna and the Viniyoga lineage. We will discuss and practice: anatomy of the spine, what good posture looks like, and how to use breath and poses to support your back. Participants will leave with a short home practice. The class is appropriate for those with chronic back pain, including disc issues, provided that your physician or physical therapist has approved gentle yoga. (The class would not be suitable for recent acute muscle or ligament sprain, unless your doctor or physical therapist has specifically OKed your participation.) The classes built on each other and registration is for the 4-class series.
The goals of the class series are:
• Improve postural alignment
• Build strength
• Enhance flexibility
• Work large muscles; and
• Find relaxation.
