Hal Ponder

Hal Ponder, an attorney and former diplomat, is a yoga teacher certified by the Yoga Alliance. He practices Sivananda yoga, which derives from Hatha yoga.

In addition to traditional yoga, Mr. Ponder also conducts classes in chair yoga and yoga for cancer patients.

Hal Ponder instructs the following:
  • Chair Yoga
  • This is a class for all levels--beginners are welcome.

In Chair Yoga the chair takes the place of the mat.
Not everyone can get down and up the floor easily making traditional yoga classes difficult. For students with physical limitations or health issues this might be the ideal class.

A fair amount of the time is spent loosening the joints and muscles and exercising in a seated position in the chairs and, if possible, we also do asanas standing, using the chairs for support. The exercises are adjusted for individual needs. The class proceeds at a comfortable pace.

With the help of a chair anyone can practice yoga with its many benefits of increased circulation, balance, flexibility, mobility, strength and more.

  • Gentle Yoga I with Meditation
  • This class is intended for those seeking to build a relationship between the physical practice of yoga postures and the practice of seated meditation. The class is typically book-ended by meditation with about 30-40 minutes of movement in the middle. The meditations are usually breath-focused or gently guided mindfulness meditations. The closing sit (meditation) is longer than the opening meditation. The movement period incorporates warm ups and classical postures targeting the building of strength, stability, balance, and mobility. This class is welcoming of practitioners dealing with prior or current injury, persistent joint pain, osteoporosis, blood pressure management, asthma and any other related conditions. The pace of the class is slow and provides time for personalized modifications and teacher assistance.

The studio temperature will be adjusted depending on outside weather conditions to suit the comfort level of students and to optimize the benefits of the practice.
